What’s in a pet wellness check (and why it matters)

Pets age faster than we do and are experts at hiding illness, so a yearly check-up does a lot of quiet, important work. Here’s what actually happens in a wellness visit, and why it’s one of the best things you can do for your pet.

The nose-to-tail exam

A wellness check is a full physical: your vet assesses weight and body condition, examines the teeth and gums, checks eyes, ears, skin and coat, listens to the heart and lungs, feels the abdomen, and assesses joints and mobility. Many issues are first spotted here, long before they’d be obvious at home.

Why once a year, at least

A single year is a big chunk of a pet’s life, and problems caught early are almost always easier — and cheaper — to treat. Senior pets often benefit from twice-yearly checks, since more can change in a shorter time as they age.

Vaccines and parasite prevention

The wellness visit is also when core and rabies vaccinations are kept up to date and parasite prevention is reviewed, so protection and prevention happen alongside the exam rather than as separate trips.

Weight and nutrition

Weight is one of the most useful early-warning signs a vet tracks, and small changes are easy to miss at home. Your vet can flag creeping weight gain and advise on food and portions before it becomes a health problem.

Bloodwork and tests when needed

Depending on age and findings, your vet may recommend baseline bloodwork — particularly for seniors — or specific tests if something needs a closer look. These build a picture of what’s normal for your pet, which makes future changes easier to catch.
