The two parts

Compliance has two pieces that go together: an ISO 15-digit microchip in your pet, and registration with your local municipality that links that chip number to you as the owner.

What a microchip is (and isn’t)

A microchip is a tiny, rice-grain-sized identifier placed under the skin and read by a scanner. It’s important to know what it isn’t: it’s not a GPS tracker and won’t show your pet’s location. What it does is prove who a found pet belongs to — which is exactly how lost pets get home.

Why registration matters

Beyond being a legal requirement, registration is what makes the microchip useful — a scanned chip is only as good as the up-to-date owner details attached to it. Registration is also often needed for travel and for some housing.

What you’ll usually need

Typically you’ll need the microchip, a current rabies vaccination, and your identification and contact details. Registration is generally renewed periodically rather than being a one-time event.

Your vet can microchip your pet and complete the municipality registration for you — often bundled into a wellness visit or a new-pet package, so it’s handled in one appointment rather than chased across offices.

Keep your details updated

If you move home or change your phone number, update the registry. A microchip linked to old details can’t do its job, so this small step keeps the whole system working.
